Vincent
Hammond was born August 27, 1965, at Providence Hospital in
Washington, D.C. The son of an electrical engineer and
builder, he was raised as an only child in a country setting
in Bowie, Maryland. In his youth, he was exposed almost
solely to country and bluegrass music, and began playing
guitar at age six. It was not until his teens that he began
to focus on pop and rock; later, he moved to classical and New
Age music.
Vincent continued playing the guitar, his music influenced
throughout his teens and early twenties by the hard rock
concerts he attended in Maryland and Washington. During this
time, he was lead guitarist in several original rock bands and
the sole composer.
A turning point in his development, he says, was the first
time he heard the music of Alex de Grassi. He was outside a
crafts shop in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, in 1986, and
heard a de Grassi recording through the open door. He was
transfixed, and at that moment knew he would devote himself to
the solo guitar. The days of the band were over.
He also was being drawn to the classical genre. In his
compositions, which can be heard on his CD, Where the
Mountains Touch the Sky, rock, New Age, and classical
influences are intertwined into the unique expression of his
spirit.
Though largely self-taught, Vincent studied with noted
teachers, including jazz guitarist Skip Anna and
classical/jazz guitarist Hank Bryant. (Bryant was a student
of Sophocles Pappas, a renowned guitarist and protege of
Andres Segovia.) Vincent also was heavily influenced through
spending countless hours listening to recordings of top
classical and New Age musicians.
Vincent's other interests while growing up included motor
cross, weightlifting, and track. He studied science and
mechanics, and worked as an electrician and builder.
Currently, Vincent performs his original compositions
throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia,
and Washington, D.C., at restaurants, lounges, country clubs,
resorts, theaters, private parties, universities, art
galleries, museums, bookstores, and weddings. He also
performs for such community and charitable organizations as
assisted living facilities, hospitals, and local cultural and
arts groups.
When he has free time, Vincent continues his studies in
electrical science and takes long drives in the Blue Ridge
Mountains, where he finds inspiration for his music.
